Most visitors can either apply for an e-Visa online before travel or obtain a Visa on Arrival (VoA) at main entry points. The e-Visa option is the recommended method to avoid potential delays at the airport.
Key Requirements
Regardless of the application method, you will need the following:
A passport with at least six months of validity from your date of entry and at least one blank page.
A recent passport-size photo (digital for e-Visa).
A copy of your return or onward flight ticket.
Proof of sufficient funds for your stay (may be requested).
Details of your accommodation or tour operator (address of your first hotel/lodge).
A yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from or transiting through a country with a high risk of yellow fever transmission.
Application Methods
1. e-Visa (Recommended)
Applying online in advance is the preferred and often more efficient method.
Process:
Visit the official Tanzania Immigration Department e-Service portal.
Click on the “e-Visa Application Form” button to start a new application.
Fill out the form, upload your photo and required documents, and pay the fee using a Visa or MasterCard.
You will receive a “Visa Grant Notice” via email within approximately ten business days (longer for “referral cases”, so apply at least two months in advance).
Print the grant notice and present it to the Immigration Officer upon arrival in Tanzania.
2. Visa on Arrival (VoA)
Visas are available upon arrival at major entry points, including Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam) and Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Process:
Fill out an application form provided at the airport.
Proceed to the visa counter, then the payment counter, and finally the immigration counter to get your passport stamped.
Payment can be made in cash (USD or EUR) or by credit card.
Visa Fees and Types
The standard tourist visa is the Ordinary (Single-Entry) Visa, typically valid for up to 90 days.
Ordinary Visa (Single Entry): $50 USD for most nationalities (e.g., UK and EU citizens).
Multiple Entry Visa: $100 USD. U.S. citizens must apply for this type even if they plan a single visit, due to bilateral agreements. It is valid for one year, allowing multiple entries with stays up to 90 days each.
Important Considerations
Referral Cases: Nationals of certain countries require special clearance and must apply online well in advance (two months recommended), waiting for approval before booking flights or accommodation. Check the official immigration website for the current list of referral countries.
Zanzibar: A single Tanzanian visa is valid for both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. You do not need a separate visa for Zanzibar.
Official Sources: Only use the official Tanzania Immigration Services website to avoid potential scams or higher fees from unofficial visa agent websites
