Summit your appetite with Kilimanjaro’s peak flavors!
Consider bringing your own snacks for a well-deserved treat or energy boost while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Chocolate, especially with nuts, is an excellent choice. Opt for your favorite treats rather than ‘power bars’ or ‘energy gels.’ These snacks, rich in dairy and chocolate, serve as a primary source of energy for both beginners and professional hikers. In case of Kilimanjaro Altitude Sickness suppressing your appetite, these enjoyable snacks can supplement your meals.
Careful consideration of the snacks you pack in your daypack can save you significant time and energy. It’s essential to choose snacks that won’t spoil, leak, or turn into a backpack disaster, ensuring a smoother experience on the mountain slopes.
Below are some straightforward guidelines to consider when selecting snacks for Kilimanjaro:
Remember that the meals on Kilimanjaro are designed to provide the necessary nutrients. When selecting snacks, choose the ones you genuinely enjoy eating!
At Kilimanjaro Brothers, our food is not just a meal; it's a flavorful journey that accompanies you on every step to the top. Simple, delicious, and unforgettable.
The main sources of carbohydrates in our meals include rice, potatoes, and pasta. Each meal is complemented by fresh fruits and vegetables. While meat is part of the menu on the mountain, it’s not provided in large quantities due to its challenges in digestion at high altitudes and limited shelf life. To ensure the team stays nourished, we regularly resupply them with fresh food during the ascent.
Opting for a high-carbohydrate diet is widely recognized as the most effective way to enhance endurance. Carbohydrates play a crucial role in replenishing depleted muscle glycogen, preventing muscle breakdown, and demanding less oxygen for metabolism. These benefits are particularly heightened at high elevations.
When exposed to high altitudes, the body undergoes a shift in its primary energy source, transitioning from fat to carbohydrates. Carbohydrates, in comparison to protein or fats, require 8-10% less oxygen for metabolism. Researchers have observed a natural increase in carbohydrate consumption among individuals at high elevations, likely as an adaptive response to the low oxygen levels in the environment.
At altitude, protein and fat are not as well tolerated. Due to a significant drop in the absorption of these nutrients, it’s advisable to adjust your intake accordingly.
Carbohydrates emerge as the preferred energy source, constituting the majority of food intake at high altitudes. It is recommended that 60% or more of your calorie intake should be derived from carbohydrates in such conditions. Consequently, our menu predominantly consists of high-carb meals designed to sustain optimal performance on the mountain.
Carbohydrates not only serve as the optimal energy source for climbing but are also essential for altitude acclimatization. Studies demonstrate that a high-carbohydrate diet plays a role in preventing symptoms associated with acute mountain sickness (AMS). Researchers have uncovered that a heightened carbohydrate intake can mitigate the impact of altitude by up to 1,000 feet at an elevation of 13,000 feet and 2,000 feet at an elevation of 17,000 feet.
Climb with taste, ascend with flavor – Kilimanjaro Brothers invites you to experience the simplicity of our cuisine that packs a punch at every elevation.
At elevated altitudes, individuals often contend with a diminished appetite and feelings of nausea. It’s crucial to persist in eating despite these challenges. Falling into a calorie deficit on the mountain can hinder acclimatization, impede recovery, and compromise athletic performance. Opting for any available food, even if it deviates from the usual choices, is preferable to abstaining from eating altogether. Therefore, consume whatever is feasible whenever possible, as protein, fat, and carbohydrates all serve as valuable sources of calories.
